The Riverina is a region in southern NSW which is considered one of Australia’s most significant food production areas, but when it comes to food the area is not just wide-scale farming. Boutique experiences are numerous and growing across the region. From the amazingly delicious Sumo mandarins to locally made wine, chocolate, cheese or roasted coffee, through to liquorice and whisky factories.

Around 1/4 of Australia’s wine grape production occurs in the Riverina.

Major population zones of the Riverina include Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Temora, Narrandera, Junee, Cootamundra and Leeton.

Wagga Wagga (known to locals as Wagga) is home to a RAAF base, army base, and a campus of Charles Sturt University.

Leeton and Griffith are deep within the irrigation area of the Riverina where crops such as wine and table grapes, rice, nuts of various descriptions, and citrus abound.

The amazing Sumo mandarin can be found in Leeton, and visitors are able to pick your own fruit at many orchards.

The Riverina caters to a wide range of sporting activities. There are numerous waterways for water sports such as skiing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and the like, while cycle paths and mountain bike single track abound.

Narrandera is one of the many towns that sit on the Murrumbidgee River and within its corridor of red gums. The ‘town of trees’ is also home to the famous Lake Talbot complex which includes pools, water slides and kiosk, as well as the adjoining lake which hosts water skiing, sailing, and fishing.

Population

As of the 2016 census, the population of the Riverina was around 156,000 people, with a median age of 40 years old.
